Using Invisalign To Improve Your Smile

Invisalign is so far one of the world's best teeth clear plastic aligners. It stands out from other brands because of its thinness. Its dimensions in girth, stand at less than 1 millimeter, according to the manufacturers, Align Technology.

The means by which the aligner moves your posterior and anterior teeth is fairly complex. Different teeth in different patients need to be moved over different degrees. Normal cases have this distance in millimeters. It is highly accurate when used correctly and extensive research has proven the same.

The aesthetics provided by this aligner is another great appealing factor. Whenever you have them on, no one will detect them on your teeth. This is thanks to the clear plastic that allows your teeth to shine through.

Before they are fitted to your teeth, three dimensional imaging of your teeth is taken using a tomographic scanner. The orthodontist calculates the distance that he expects your teeth to move and logs in the same for the development of a customized aligner. A set of aligners is developed using computer aided design, manufactured to specifically move your teeth over the specified distance in two weeks.

The manufacturing and attachment process is always improving, implying faster treatment, higher precision in alignment and probably with time, this type of clear aligner will be used to treat more complex problems.

In treatment, there are factors that may influence the results of using this aligner. Age, the medically set distance/rate of tooth movement, bone density and facial structure of a patient determine how fast and effective the results are.

Studies on the total effectiveness of Invisalign are limited, but there a couple of positive patient reviews after using this appliance. This is better than nothing. Besides, there are no recorded negative side effects. Like with all other teeth straightening methods, the teeth may revert to their former position if bad habits like tongue thrusting persist.

This 'invisibility' is limited in a slight way. At the edge of the teeth, on very close inspection, you can see the translucent edges of the device. It is not however, unsightly. Sometimes, an orthodontist may recommend that you use the device together with another fixed appliance, after or before surgery.

Mild non-skeletal malocclusion is for example, a case of crowding or spacing of less than 5 millimeters. Another mild case is during a relapse of the condition immediately after treatment with a fixed appliance. If not treated early enough however, it may be too late to use clear aligners. Teeth rotation of less than 20 degrees is also mild.

With this type of clear aligner, most of the burden of getting the desired results is on you. Once the tray is developed, an orthodontist cannot make any adjustments to it. Your discipline and compliance to treatment is the determining factor. Some aligners may be marked with faintly colored compliance indicators to monitor the patient's adherence to the total wear time recommended. These indicators fade when the prescription is followed faithfully.

To maintain good oral hygiene, for comfort and above all, esthetic reasons, a clear aligner would definitely improve your smile.
