Life Insurance, the Ice Bucket Challenge, the Chilling Similarities

Did you know September is Life Insurance Awareness Month? What makes you aware of life insurance?

What has made me more aware of life insurance is the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.What is ALS? According to the ALS Association, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as "Lou Gehrig's Disease," is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to their death.[1] There is not a cure or treatment today that halts or reverses ALS.

The Ice Bucket Challenge was created to bring awareness and monetary donations to the ALS Association for research. According to Wikipedia, the rules of the Ice Bucket Challenge are as follows:

Within 24 hours of being challenged, participants have to record a video of themselves in continuous footage. First, they are to announce their acceptance of the challenge followed by pouring ice into a bucket of water. Then, the bucket is to be lifted and poured over the participant's head. Then the participant can call out a challenge to other people.Whether people choose to donate, perform the challenge, or do both varies. In one version of the challenge, the participant is expected to donate $10 if they have poured the ice water over their head or donate $100 if they have not. [2]

Millions of singers,actors,athletes CEO's and everyday people have taken the challenge.The Ice Bucket Challenge started in July 2014 and as of August 29, 2014, 3 million donors have made donations to the ALS association in excess of $100 million dollars. I am extremely grateful for all of those who have donated to the ALS Foundation as this has hit close to my home. I have a family member who has ALS and it is a disease that nobody ever speaks about because it is a fatal disease. The Ice Bucket Challenge has brought awareness to people and has made a huge impact on donations. Hopefully with this increase in donations, a cure can be found for this disease.
