Learn the Correct Handling of Cable Drums

Industry users must learn how to handle cable drums appropriately. You need to follow procedures strictly or else, this can cause severe damages to the drums and cables. Check for and cracks or corrosion frequently. There are times when the damage is not detected until after the wires have been installed. By this time, repairs or replacement will be very expensive. It is also a waste of time and negative impression for clients. Hence, follow the guidelines to ensure everything goes well during storage and moving.

Make sure that drums are stacked upright at all times so the wires will not get twisted. These spools should never be positioned horizontally. Follow the arrows' direction in rolling the cylinders. This prevents uncoiling of cables. Do not roll further than five meters because it can stretch the cable. The rope that holds the cable tip can be severed and bend the wires. In other words, you cannot use the cable anymore. It is important to utilize stoppers so the drums will not roll down during haulage. Balance the drums while in the process of hoisting. The containers should not be touching each other while being lifted.

Forklift operators should tip the mast so the drum is secured by the fork and the points do not touch the surface. The forks should be elevated no less than six to eight inches higher than the ground. Inadequate clearance can damage the drum due to dropping or dragging. The operator must not let go of the reel until the forklift is in a full stop. Never push the drums using the truck bumper. There should be enough space between the cable drums so the fork will not cause any scratches.

Nailing should be done with utmost care. Avoid pinning nails on the containers. In case this is unavoidable, be sure that the nails do not hit the wires. Fasten the drums tightly because spherical objects roll down easily. Besides, these items are unstable because the center is empty and the entire weight leans on the peripheral portion. Huge drums should be raised from the ground and placed on triangular or square blocks. These wedges should be positioned by the overhang or complete width of the drum. Storage areas should be dry and flat. If possible, the surface should be made of concrete. This will prevent the drums from sinking in the ground. Consider proper circulation of air during storage. Drums must be shifted to 90 degree angles once every quarter in case of long periods of safekeeping.
