Installing And Caring For Your Blinds

Blinds are a brilliant invention designed to keep out the sun while according you privacy in your home or office at the same time. Given that style evolves every single day, it may be a daunting task choosing which to install be it a first time user or a person seeking to replace existing ones.

According To Style

a. Slat blinds-these are horizontal or vertically placed metal/vinyl stripped, with a string attached to them and are the most common. They are also called Persian blinds. They can be rotated at different angles and also shut tightly to vary the degree of sunlight filtering in. Blinds with horizontal slats are popularly referred to as louvers.

Mini blinds have very thin slats. Metal blinds can actually be removed from the windows for cleaning separately, but they have to be washed when shut, dried then fixed back with no trouble.

Cleaning method: Use a soft cloth, dishwashing liquid and water to hand clean or soak in a bathtub, scrub and dry them.

b. Venetian blinds-these are made out of wood, but can rot or get damaged when soap and water is used on them. It is recommended that oil soap be used instead, like Murphy Oil Soap, developed by Colgate Palmolive.

They Can Also Be Made Of Plastic Or Metal

c. Vertical blinds-these are shut/open through side to side movement instead of up/down movement. Do not use soap and water for this type, simply vacuum carefully with the attachment on the vacuum or spot-wipe with a woolen duster. You can choose to have sheer vertical blinds installed for more light. They do not collect dust easily since they stand upright, so spot-cleaning would be the best method.

d. Roman blinds- they are designed to block out the sun, and come lined with a blackout lining, which can be customized. It is a type of a roller blind, so named after the method of shutting and opening them. Cleaning them is easiest and best with oil soap if made of wood or with damp cloth depending on the fabric. They could also be feather dusted from time to time. Fabrics blinds can be removed and taken to a dry cleaner's to dry clean them safely.

According to materials used, they can be vinyl, polyester, aluminum, wood or fabric like suede.

Vacuuming for all types of blinds should be done across the structure, not in an up and down movement. Plaswood, a blend of plastic and wood can be used instead of real wood. They do not dent like natural wood does and are therefore suitable for places with high temperatures or high humidity like showers. Pleated blinds are discrete when open as they rest at the top and can be automated for ease of use.

Installing blinds in the home can keep you warm in winter since they trap some heat, and level the temperatures in your home by reflecting sunlight. For matters of style, you can customize Plaswood or fabric blinds to suit your tastes by adding patterns or whatever art you think expresses your personality best.
