Why You Need Sub Floor Ventilation

Having ventilation systems installed beneath your floors has many benefits. Here are five of them.

1. Healthier individuals

Damp air is known to cause respiratory diseases and trigger allergic reactions. The chain runs like this: Damp air encourages mold to grow and multiply. Condensation occurs and the liquid formed provides an excellent environment for fungi to grow. Mold produces substances that when inhaled by asthmatic individuals, induce attacks. Mold can also release toxic substances that irritate the lungs and affect the function of the nervous system.

2. Warm floors

The Heat Recovery Ventilation System, when fixed beneath floors, tends to warm up the house. How comfortable is it to walk barefoot on a lightly heated floor especially during winter?

3. Dry floors

Both the bottom and top sections of the floor are kept dry. The opposite of this would be walking on damp timber which can be very uncomfortable and sickening.

4. Wood lasts longer

When moisture is absorbed by wood over time, molds grows on it and causes it to rot. When it rots, it weakens. This becomes an additional threat to you because anyone in the home could step on it and it gives way.

Termites also tend to attack damp timber. The structural damage caused by these insects can be devastating. The Australian Timber Database lists sub floor ventilation as an effective way of fending off termite attacks. The system needs to be suspended in the area between the floor and the earth.

Usually, the problem is realized when it is almost too late. The invasion takes place silently and goes unnoticed because it happens out of sight. It is only when tiny holes are visible from the top that homeowners bother to check the root of the problem.

The same goes for mold. A sudden white or green patch peeks from the underside of the wood one day. On examining, you realize that your precious wooden floor cannot be saved.

5. Odor Free home

The constant circulation of air that is beneath your home means no musty smells are trapped down there. There are homes which, sad to say, have characteristically moldy smells. The only way to get rid of this is to have a proper sub floor ventilation system installed.

The area beneath the floor can also trap other smells from the home, and it gets difficult to eliminate them. A good ventilation system will aid in air movement, drawing fresh air from outside.

This type of ventilation saves you money and a great deal of time in the long run, especially if used together with the Heat Recovery Ventilation System. It works best in buildings with sub floors though for those without, a tailor made option can be worked out of you consult the best fitters.

If you are building or looking for a new home, consider one with vents than run beneath the floor so you enjoy clean, dry odorless air in the home.

You can avoid all of the above health risks by having a sub floor ventilation systemfitted into your home. Obviously, the structure of your home is considered while recommendations are being made. Only the best contractor will have it done excellently.
