Contrasting Traditional And Modern Kitchens

There are stark differences between modern kitchens and traditional kitchens. Here are a few differences:

Decorations

Modern kitchens have minimal ornamentation. Traditional kitchens have old school kind of decorative pieces, like patterned pots and detailed drawer handles. In contrast, faucets and taps are most likely to be the focal points in a modern kitchen, being made into unconventional but interesting shapes.

Layout

A modern kitchen has distinct area for dining, cooking and storage. They are also increasingly incorporating seating areas in the plan.

Given the continuity that is sometimes seen in one walled modern kitchens, there are islands that are multipurpose. They serve as the 'food bar', the work area and sometimes cooking area, depending on the space available. The island also acts as the barrier between the living room and the kitchen.

Traditional kitchens mostly have islands right in the middle of the room, in addition to marble countertops mounted to the walls.

Fixtures

The entire look in a modern kitchen is seamless. Cabinets are handless, and are either click to open or automated.

Food is kept out of sight in a modern kitchen. It is very easy to find open/wall shelves in traditional kitchens, purposefully displaying food items.

The surfaces in modern kitchens are super high gloss and thoroughly polished. It is easier to describe the overall look of the kitchen as 'pristine' and 'plain' rather than 'cheerful and full of character' as you would a traditional kitchen.

There are many built in appliances, mounted on the wall, something not so common in country kitchens.

Structure And Material

Traditional or country kitchens have visible brickwork on the surface. The most common material used on surfaces and fixtures like countertops and cabinets is wood and stone. In contrast, steel, glass and concrete are the predominant materials in contemporary kitchens.

Generally, contemporary kitchens are more elegant and sleek, as compared to the cozy, warm and inviting feel of a traditional kitchen.

The overall theme of the modern kitchen is majorly based on three colors-black, grey and white. The choices are not limited as very bright colors can be incorporated on surfaces. Traditional kitchens mostly have cherry wood or blonde sturdy wood material. Even where wood is used in a modern kitchens, it is done in white or black polished mahogany and walnut.

Ergonomics is highly considered. Appliances are made easy to use, and quite within reach. The goal is to have maximum execution of tasks with minimal movement involved. The tool used are comfortable and safer to use. According to Australian Design Review, one of the most trends in demand for kitchens today are ergonomics. More people are favoring the linear layout for their appliances.

Storage

There is always a high demand for space in kitchens. There are a number of brilliant yet discrete storage solutions in a modern kitchen. One of the areas being considered is at the bottom of the island. A push to open drawer can blend quite easily and its exterior can be designed to look continuous with the island block.

Lighting

It is less dramatic, but literally every corner in a modern kitchen is illuminated. There are small and safe light fixtures that are fit beneath and inside cupboards.
