The free standing bath is much loved because of its portability and its ability to double up as a decorative structure. However, with it, come some features that could make or break its beauty and function:
The faucets
The most important features are the faucets and handles. Without them your bath is useless. For an even cleaner look, get a spout only and eliminate the faucet. These obviously are sold as an independent unit, and made to fit into the plumbing system of your bathroom to fill the bath. Freestanding faucets are an amazing thing because they allow you to choose whatever suits you. Faucets made out of steel and chrome are sleek, and draw attention to themselves with the way they shine. Uniquely shaped handles can make that particular point of the bathroom a focal point.
Thermostatic faucets and mixers are a necessity to maintain the balance between tepid and scalding hot water. In its absence, you could get scalded if someone flushes the toilet or runs water in the sink.
Waterfall faucets are simply grand. They have wider spouts, and fill up the baths, with the stream of water coming out of them imitating the action of water from a waterfall.
Telephone faucets come complete with handles.Deck mount faucets are a beautiful and creative addition. The filler taps are simply mounted onto a raised pre-installed deck, standing next to the tub. Levered faucets are the easiest to use.
The faucets are available in a variety of colors and finishes- gold, steel, standard chrome, brass, nickel and copper are some of the most popular. Nickel plating in particular has a golden shine with brass beneath it. Brass, which is popular in traditional bathrooms, is durable and strong, but tarnishes when exposed to the air for a while. It has to be polished often to keep it shiny. For this reason, it is mostly coated with an inert element.
For whatever you choose, the ultimate goal is to have a room whose décor is uniform, where colors and textures blend into each other beautifully.
Feet
For the traditional look, gold coated fillers could be put up to match the tub's gold feet for example.
Handles
Cross handles made out of metal are the most common in telephone faucets. Canopy handles are bold and beautiful. They come in several beautiful shapes, and those of handheld showers can also be customized.
Fillers
Floor mounted fillers are the most convenient accessory for free standing baths. Pairing the bath with an antique filler injects some old school style and vintage charm to the room.
Drains and Wastes
They come in the form of plugs attached to chains, or independent plugs. These come as separate units, in different materials and finishes. Plugs for instance, are made of rubber, brass or chrome.
When put together properly, what may not strike you when on its own can look beautiful in a room. In the end, your room is accented and decorated subtly, but with tremendous results. You will notice the gentle arch of the faucet spouts, the gleam of polished chrome nickel and the silky, luxurious look and feel of smooth stone.
