3 Ways To Carry Out Bathroom Asbestos Removal

Asbestos was used in buildings in the 1940s to the 1980s in Australia. The material is known for its durability, insulation and fire resistance. However, it has been noted that the material causes more harm than good and is no longer recommended for use in buildings. In fact, the Australian Workers Union is campaigning for the removal of all materials containing asbestos from Australia by the year 2030.

Materials containing asbestos in the bathroom are likely to be found on floors, walls and fittings. It acts as a compound which is added to an adhesive to bind vinyl tiles and make vinyl wallpaper. Part of the material was also used to make bath tubs. Asbestos was commonly used in the bathroom because of its water resistant property.

Safe Work Australia recommends that an inspection be carried out first to determine the type of asbestos present, before proceeding with removal. After inspection, the removal process can begin. This task should be carried out by a licensed contractor.

Ensure that you hire a contractor who follows all the precautionary measures that apply in removal of asbestos. For instance, wearing protective gear to reduce the chances of coming into direct contact with asbestos and limiting access to the area being worked on should be priorities.

Here are several ways you can use to remove asbestos from your bathroom:

1. Water Injection and Saturation

In this method, very thick asbestos is fully soaked in water. The bathroom floor is likely to have such thick asbestos. Water is injected directly into the asbestos by use of a special injecting head that has inlets and outlets for water. The injectors are later disposed of as asbestos waste, because of their direct contact with the harmful substance.

2. Dry Removal Method

This method is applied when working in a bathroom with live wires and good conductors of electricity. This is meant to avoid accidents like electric shocks. The method can also be applied when working in areas that are enclosed fully or partially.

3. Wet Removal Method

This method is highly favoured by most asbestos removal contractors because it reduces the chances of fibres getting airborne. Minimal or no dust is guaranteed because the water in use is under low pressure. Here, the fibres are suppressed by pouring water over them under minimal pressure. A detergent could be added to the water to boost absorption rates. The bathroom surface should remain wet throughout the process. Such a method can be used to remove bathroom asbestos tiles.

Be keen to identify asbestos in your bathroom because it may be found on the beautiful tiles, wallpaper and ceiling. You definitely don't want to discover such a harmful substance when it's already too late.

Always keep in mind that handling of asbestos should be done with a lot of precaution in order to avoid inhaling its harmful fibres. Rules and regulations for asbestos removal also apply in bathroom asbestos removal, no matter how big or small the room is.
