DIY Asbestos Roof Removal Tips

Handy Tips For Your Asbestos Roof Removal Project

Health Risks Associated With Asbestos

You are probably reading this because you recently found out about the number of asbestos related deaths in the past couple of years, and are looking for ways in which you can remove this risky substance in your own home.

Tips To Consider During The Removal Process

1. It is important that you spread a plastic sheet on the ground where the asbestos will be removed from the roof.

2. Wear protective equipment. The right clothes and equipment to have when handling asbestos will be discussed below.

3. Ensure that anyone who is not wearing the protective gear should be far away from the removal sight.

4. Asbestos dust is dangerous when inhaled. To reduce the chances of you inhaling this dust or releasing it into the air, it is advised that you wet it first. This way, when you drill or cut into it, it will limit the amount of dust.

5. Any asbestos material that you have already removed should be kept wet. It should not be allowed to dry. You can do this by keeping a spray bottle of water nearby.

6. Once through, place all the removed asbestos in airtight sealable bags. These bags should be disposed of only at dump sites that have been created specifically to handle toxic waste. You also want to remove the clothes and masks worn during the procedure and place them in a plastic bag to be disposed of too. This will help ensure that not even a small amount of asbestos remains on your person.

Safety Equipment Worn During The Process

Because of the nature of asbestos, and how harmful it is to the respiratory system, it is important that you wear the right gear throughout the time you are removing and handling it. Below is some of the equipment you need to have before handling asbestos.

1. Respirators. You can choose either a half mask, full mask or paper to shield your mouth from the asbestos that may be released into the air. The full mask is mostly recommended as it aids in preventing the asbestos from coming into contact with the skin. The kind of filters used in these masks are p2 and p3, with the latter being able to stop at least 99% of any airborne material.

2. Coveralls. Before purchasing them, you will need to determine whether they are suitable enough to prevent asbestos.

3. Shoes. You should opt for shoes that have steel caps. It is easy for asbestos to become trapped in most clothing fibers, so you will need to eliminate the chances of this happening. If you wear shoes with laces, you should remove them and dispose of them before getting back into the house.

4. Gloves. As with shoes, fabric gloves can attract asbestos too. Instead, you should use latex gloves not unlike the ones you would use to wash the dishes with.
