Little Known Things That Could Be Blocking Your Drain

Surprising Culprits of Blocked Drains

Getting Rid of Blocked Drains

It doesn't take one big glob of junk to block your drain; there are several other smaller culprits that you may not be aware of. If you find yourself constantly having to unblock your drain, check to see if you have been letting these items escape into the drain.

Top Drainage Blocking Culprits

1. Fat, oil and grease. Even though these three substances may look innocent enough while in liquid form, as soon as they come into contact with something cold, for example, your pipes, they cool down and harden. In time, the hardened mass continues to pile up, leading to a blockage. Instead of pouring oil down the drain, try blotting it out with a paper towel and then throwing it into a bin.

2. Coffee grinds. Throw your coffee grinds into the bin where they belong. They will not dissolve in your pipes, and will only block them.

3. Orange peels. There is a myth that if you put orange peels down your drain, they will help in making your drain smell fresh. They will only help in clogging it. Instead of making it feel fresh, it will contribute to a rotting smell thanks to it being clogged.

4. Tea leaves. Tea leaves may seem harmless enough to pour down the drain, but because they do not dissolve, they can pose a potential blocking problem. Over time, the buildup will increase to the point where you will require the services of a plumber.

5. Medication. Despite the fact that your medication has expired, you are advised to avoid pouring it down the drain. There are some drugs that turn into a hard substance over time, which will only be a source of a problem for you. Most medications include a manufacturer's guide on how to properly dispose of the medicine.

6. Gelatin. This goes for any substance that contains high amounts of gelatin as an ingredient. If it won't go into your stomach, it should go into the bin. Gelatin can be surprisingly good at blocking your drain.

7. Pasta. Semolina is an ingredient that is found in common pasta brands. This substance is very sticky, especially when it is wet, and if left unchecked, can lead to a potentially large problem. If you need to drain pasta directly over your sink, you want to ensure that no pasta sneaks its way into your sink.

8. Hair. A lot of people tend to cut or trim their hair over the sink, but what they may not know is that hair can be create a really tangled mess. You want to avoid rinsing it down your sink, or even flushing it in your toilet. Other pieces of debris can get caught up in a ball of hair and soon create blocked plumbing. To avoid this, make sure you keep track of all the hair you've cut and dispose of it in the bin.

9. Eggshells. Despite their size, eggshells can cause a large problem is they are left to accumulate in a section of the plumbing system. Avoid this by disposing of all eggshells into the bin.
