Well, it is that time of year again... Another year comes to a close and a new year is upon us. Some view it as an opportunity for a fresh start; some view it as nothing more than a continuation of the old; and some dread it and view it as a very stressful time with the hangover effects from too much excess over the holidays - financially, physically and psychologically. Many love to make resolutions, and many don't.
It is best to take the positive view and try to reflect on the past year and see if there are any opportunities to advance yourself further this year either personally or professionally. Is there something you would like to change, or are you happy with status quo? Is there something you wish you handled differently or correct? Spend more time with your children? Take a vacation? Stop procrastinating and get that bathroom remodeled that you should have done a couple years ago? Take that online course about Emotional Intelligence you've have wanted to take but just haven't found the time to do it? Apply for a new certification to help your career advancement?
There are always things to do and improvements to be made. The key is to finding the right balance and not getting too stressed out about it while you do. The last thing you want to do is to get even more overwhelmed by life's challenges.
Key Points to Remember:
1. Make a plan - When you are ready to make a change, make a plan. Think about how you are going to achieve it. Carefully prepare and research prior to undertaking a change. Understand how it is going to not only impact you but also those around you. If you are improving your skills through online classes, create a road map of where you want to get to throughout 2014. If you have a plan and you are prepared, you are much more likely to stick with the plan and become successful!
2. Pace yourself - You want to gradually improve yourself and your life, not complicate it. It is important to remember that as you reflect on the past year. Little, gradual changes do multiply over time.
3. Stay positive - Don't be negative or too hard on yourself. If the experience of changing is viewed as negative or harsh, there is a higher likelihood of being dropped.
4. Don't give up - If you really want to make the change, keep at it. It isn't easy but you can do it. Find creative ways to keep you inspired and encouraged along the way.
5. Don't change for the sake of change - Do it for the right reasons. If you don't want to make a change, but are only doing it because it is the new year and you feel like you have to, don't. Do it for the right reasons and on your timeline. If your heart isn't in it and you aren't motivated, you aren't going to be successful and will just be frustrated. You need to want to do it for yourself; otherwise you are just wasting your time, money and other's time. Use your valuable time wisely.
6. Be happy - If you are already happy with everything you have and what you are doing and have accomplished, then be happy and satisfied. You don't have to change. Take a break and be content. However, you should take a moment to reflect on this and make sure that you take the time to take stock of your accomplishments and be proud of them. Relish the moment.
