One of the reasons why we choose to have blinds is because we need privacy in the home. Other times, it could be a matter of style or wanting to block harsh sun rays out. The four general categories of classifying them are according to shape (vertical or horizontal). Here are some of the types of blinds available in the Australian market:
Vertical Blinds
They draw from side to side, either opening from the center or from one end to the other. These work well in large spaces like doors. They can be made long or short, unlike horizontal blinds which can become a challenge in terms of adjustment. They tend to work faster than horizontal blinds and are either made of fabric or plastic.
Horizontal Blinds
They are appropriate for windows. The most common type are Venetian, which are either made out of vinyl or metal. The horizontal strips of plastic /metal are strung by cords which can rotate over 180 degrees to regulate light and temperature. This feature that allows regulation is a great advantage. Some of the time, they can be rolled away entirely so the window stays bare.
Mini-blinds offer better privacy, since they are thinner slated and close more tightly.
Wooden venetian blinds are another popular version of blinds. Bamboo is the most common. They also give the most privacy in a room. However, they are more expensive and tend to rot when cleaned with soap and water. Oil soap, specifically suited for wood is recommended.
Solid Blinds/Shades/Roman Blinds
These are sheets with blacked out film embossed on them and specifically meant to keep the sun out and keep temperatures down in the process. Though the sun's rays are blocked, anyone inside the room can see through them. The only disadvantage is that they cannot be adjusted to regulate the amount of light filtering into the room. They are roller blinds, meaning they curl downward or upward when opened. They are mostly found in sun parlors and are preferred in commercial establishments because they also keep out insects and flies. During the cold season, they come in handy by trapping the heat in the room and stopping it from escaping.
Honeycomb Blinds
This is a type of pleated shade, whose cross-sectional view looks like bees' honeycombs, with tiny hexagonally shaped gaps linked together. These spaces trap air, which is a good insulator and keeps the heat in during winter or at night. They can be opened partially or fully to let just enough light while blocking the view of your home from the rest of the world. All the above shades can either be automated by using a switch or operated manually using strings. These cords can be a safety hazards, because children can choke on them if they hang low. In this case, cleats can be used to fasten them and keep them out of the way.
Blinds can additionally be customized like the roman blinds, which can be made out of patterned fabric of different textures to suit your style.
